Just north of the Gold Coast, Lincoln Park's sprawling greens extend parallel to Lake Shore Drive, offering a place to relax and enjoy the outdoors. While much of the park consists of open space and towering trees, the Lincoln Park Zoo winds through the central portion, while the Shakespeare Gardens bloom slightly to the north. Marinas and beaches line the Lake Michigan coast just to the east.
Spreading west from the park and north of Old Town, the Lincoln Park neighborhood has grown into a dynamic community over the past twenty years. Recent college graduates, single young professionals, and families with young children tend to settle here, along with older residents who have called Lincoln Park home for years.
While there are a number of high-rises along Lakeshore Drive, the area is known for the grand greystones, stately mansions, and a mixof two-flats standing on quiet, tree-lined streets. Since these can cost over $1 million dollars, more realistic housing is available in residential condo buildings, many only 4-5 stories high, reflecting the neighborhood's cozy charm.
No matter the housing they choose, residents flock to the area because it is both sophisticated and charming, an urban location with a friendly, small-town atmosphere with an abundance of shopping, dining and leisurely activity options. Couture boutiques mix with sporting good stores, jewelry shops, and specialty stores along Halsted Avenue and Armitage Avenue. Larger retailers, such as Best Buy, Whole Foods, and Crate and Barrel can be found along the shopping corridor on North Avenue.
Halsted Avenue, and the streets branching from it, boast an abundance of restaurants, certain to satisfy any appetite, any time of day. Brunch at hot spot Toast, grab a specialty sandwich at a neighborhood deli, feast on Spanish tapas at Caf?? Ba-Ba-Reeba, or meet up with friends at Tilly's, a favorite bar among locals. And, on and around North Lincoln Avenue, some of the city's most popular bars and pubs beckon the post-dinner crowd, college students from nearby DePaul, and tourists, every night of the week.
Since the CTA Brown, Purple, and Red lines make multiple stops in Lincoln Park and a number of buses run routes through it, the neighborhood offers convenient access to the rest of the city, while at the same time providing a retreat from it.
